Skincare routine for autumn/winter at your fingertips

Source – (Dailypost, 2017)

Summer has ended and the most anticipated season of the year is at our doorstep along with loads of festivals. The way the seasons change, unfortunately, the behaviour of the skin also changes and it tends to become dry and flaky. The drop in temperature and moisture in the air can take a toll on your skin if you do not alter your skin care regime as per the requirement of the season. Autumn/Winter can also be a good time to repair the damage summer heat and the scorching sun has done to your skin. Like every year, the cool breeze and foggy weather slowly make its way in and we prepare ourselves to pack away the summer dresses. It is imperative to remember that covering your skin with jeans, sweaters, coats and stockings doesn’t mean that you can take a 3 to 4 months break from your skincare routine. In India, we tend to often neglect skin care in winters because of the fact that it is only for a couple of months or a quarter of the year (max).

When I talk about skin care, it’s not just the face that needs to be taken care off. In fact, in autumn/winter, the whole body requires moisturizing. Drying of the skin can also cause rashes and irritation on other body parts. Here are a few things you can change in your skincare routine for fall-winter without spending a fortune.

Exfoliate as much as possible

If your skin doesn’t show that doesn’t mean you can neglect exfoliation. Exfoliation helps regeneration of skin cells and removes dead skin which can hinder the absorption of moisture. Also, dehydrated skin makes your skin dull and flaky for months. A perfect solution to this is you give a backseat to your fragrant and soapy shower gels and soap. Switch to a soap-free, milk or cream-based shower cream for bathing.

Scrubbing

Scrubbing twice a week is as important as exfoliating with shower gel. For fall/winter, you can scrub with oil or sugar-based scrubs which will keep your skin refreshed and radiant.

Switch from lotion to cream

Use cream instead of lotion

The summer heat and sweat can cause irritation even when you apply a gel-based lotion but in winters a cream is a must. As the air loses moisture, the skin also needs a much effective moisturizer. Creams are thicker and can create a barrier between skin and the dry atmosphere. They lock the pores by preventing any water loss from the outer layer of the skin and provide hydration simultaneously. The best time to apply creams is immediately after bathing.

Olive oil is a life saver

If you are one of those people who wish to stay away from cosmetics and chemical based skin care products than olive oil is your best friend. From head to toe, olive oil can save your skin from dryness and dullness all day long. Even creams do not protect your skin for that long after they get absorbed into your skin as olive oil does. If you have an oily skin, then you may not want to apply olive oil on your face but those who have dry skin can apply olive oil to their face before they go to sleep.

Lip care

Lip flaking is the first sign of dry skin during fall/winter and it also remains the most common problem for almost all of us. Lipsticks do provide moisturizing but they are not good enough to keep your lips soft and hydrated all day long. Don’t Worry! We have the solution to that as well. You can apply castor oil on your lips before going to bed which will work all night long and keep your lips soft. Also, if you are very keen on applying lipsticks, then you can first apply a lip balm or petroleum jelly before you apply lipstick. This will create a double barrier and lock your skin moisture.

Invest in hand creams

I know from my experience, that my hands lose a lot of moisture in winters and look like the hands of a 60 years old lady. To prevent myself from the embarrassment, I apply a thick oil-based cream at night before sleeping which keeps my hands hydrated until morning. Also, in the daytime, you may want to keep your hand cream in your handbag to apply after every wash. A variety of hand creams are now available in different flavours and fragrances, for you to choose accordingly.

Apart from externally providing moisture to your skin, your diet also plays an important role in keeping your skin glowy and radiant. Water intake naturally goes down during winters, which turns out to be a prominent reason for skin dryness.
