Why do you get stretch marks?

Stretch marks are those scars which are never welcome but often they are celebrated for bringing a life into this world or shedding the extra kilos. The skin has three layers, Epidermis (outer layer), dermis (middle layer) and hypodermic or subcutaneous (lower layer). Stretch marks also known as striae occur when the skin is stretched over its elasticity limit due to rapid expansion or contraction of the skin.

The dermis or epidermis are most prone to the stretch and the initial stage of these marks are pink or red in colour. Eventually, they either fade away or become permanent turning white and translucent. The spider veins are more common among women due to post-pregnancy weight loss and changes in the physical condition. The most prominent areas are thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and calves.

How to get rid of stretch marks?

It is imperative here to understand that there is no guarantee of stretch marks fading away completely. Especially the older ones which have turned white are very difficult to remove. Removing stretch marks naturally is not a one day job. It requires time and regularity. Home remedies for removing stretch marks can be very useful but it works effectively on the new ones. Natural products for stretch marks can fade them away making them less visible.

There is no best treatment for stretch marks. It depends on what suits you, your skin type and reasons for stretch marks. If you want to remove stretch marks naturally then the first thing to keep in mind is that it will take time. You should keep your skin moisturized and body hydrated at all times. Dry skin makes them more visible and brings down the elasticity.

Shea butter is extracted from shea tree and is known for its rejuvenating, anti-aging, hydrating and moisturizing properties. Shea butter contains loads of fatty acids, Vitamin A and E which keeps your skin ultra-hydrated and moisturized. Retinoid which is usually recommended for stretch marks is a form of Vitamin A.
How to use it
Apply shea butter on the places you have stretch marks and massage thoroughly. Repeat it twice or thrice a day to supply moisture to your skin.

Castor oil has multiple beauty benefits including hair regrowth to treating stretch marks. Castor oil has fatty acids and ricin oleic acid which locks the moisture in the skin keeping the cells hydrated. Its thick consistency makes it difficult to apply during summers but its effect is very long lasting.
How to use it
Heat castor oil until its lukewarm and massage gently on the areas you have got stretch marks. Alternatively, you can mix castor oil with olive oil and leave it overnight. Repeat it daily in summers and two times in winters.

Aloe vera is a very versatile ingredient in beauty products for curing many skin and hair related problems. Aloe vera has both healing and soothing properties which clinically prove that aloe vera can remove stretch marks up to some extent.
How to use it
Cut a piece of aloe vera fresh from the plant. Use knife or spoon to extract the gel and apply it to the affected area. Massage till it gets absorbed in the skin and do not rinse. You can also mix it with castor oil for better results.

Vitamin E is widely found in creams and lotions to prevent aging and remove scars. It is also used for hair regrowth and conditioning. Due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, vitamin E oil can be applied to stretch marks too. It keeps the skin blemish free and moisturized.
How to use it
Extract the vitamin oil from vitamin E capsule and mix it with castor/olive oil. You may also apply vitamin E directly. Massage till I get absorbed and leave overnight. Vitamin E oil can be mixed with any oil and applied to the affected area.

Cocoa butter is obtained from cocoa beans which makes it a vegetable oil. It contains first-rate emollient assets and antioxidants that softens and calms the skin. It penetrates deep into the skin layers moisturizing and hydrating the skin cells.
How to use it
Apply cocoa butter and massage till it dissolves. Repeat it twice daily or leave it overnight. You may have to heat it in winters to melt. Cocoa butter based creams are also effective in treating the stretch marks.

Apart from treating stretch marks, baby oil has many other beauty benefits too. Baby oil is 98% minerals and 2% fragrance. It keeps the skin hydrated for a very long time without any side effects. It locks the skin moisture in the skin very effectively.
How to use it

Simply apply baby oil to the areas where you have stretch marks and massage for 10-15 minutes. You don’t need to heat it anytime during winters or summers. Perhaps, you and your baby can use baby oil if it has been caused by pregnancy.

From getting rid of dark circles to healing cracked heels, coconut oil can do it all. Like castor oil, baby oil and olive oil, coconut oil also contains fatty acids which penetrate deep into the skin to hydrate it.
How to use it
Heat the coconut oil till its luke warm and apply directly on the stretch marks. You may also add vitamin E capsules or/and castor oil to make it more effective. Massage till it dissolves and leave overnight.

There are plenty of creams, oils and gels available in the market which have proved to be effective in solving stretch marks related problems. Most common of them is ‘Bio Oil’.
